Objective
The increasing complexity and digitalisation of payment and securities settlement systems require robust and efficient testing strategies to ensure their reliability, security, and compliance. Automated functional testing has become a key component in the quality assurance process, enabling central banks and financial institutions to detect issues early, reduce operational risks, and accelerate innovation.
This course provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to automated functional testing in the context of payment and settlement systems. Topics and case studies will be presented from the Bundesbank’s perspective, complemented by participant presentations on national experiences and solutions. This ensures a balanced exchange of expertise and practical insights throughout the course.
Participants will gain practical insights into test automation frameworks, best practices for adapting test cases for automation (such as ensuring repeatability and robust data management), and the integration of automated testing into the software development life cycle. The course further addresses the specific challenges of test automation in regulated payment environments, including documentation and auditability requirements, secure handling of test data, and risk management aspects related to test operations.
Active participation in discussions and practical exercises is expected.

Target group
The course is designed for mid-level and senior central bank employees, as well as professionals from payment and settlement system operators. A solid background in payment and settlement processes is essential. Basic knowledge of software testing or IT project management is beneficial but not mandatory.
Participants are encouraged to actively contribute to discussions and practical sessions, including sharing their experiences and challenges in the field of test automation, including a short presentation on national experiences or solutions to test automation in payment systems.
